During an outing with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.167245326653366.37361.129811260396773&type=3">Mr.Beans</a> we came across an old friend. It was NIKKI, but there was something a little different about Miss Nikki, so <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.167245326653366.37361.129811260396773&type=3" target="_blank">Beans</a> had to really check her out. Nikki is an old gal with a very young spirit and mind, but Nikki's body is not keeping up that well, so her mama got her a set of hot wheels and let us tell you... Miss Nikki can move!!! Over curbs, on grass, down stairs and over feet lol. Nothing will stop this little lady, not even a 'Beans'. These two enjoyed seeing each other again, searching for toys in leaves and getting loved on by <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.167245326653366.37361.129811260396773&type=3">Beans</a> mentor for the day, Bryan. Mr.Beans loves having a buddy and he especially loves going on new adventures.<br /><br />Check out some photos from the afternoon. And by the way, Mr.Beans is looking for a family to call his own. Is is you?! ;) Email mk9karen@hotmail.com if you would like to start your journey with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.167245326653366.37361.129811260396773&type=3" target="_blank">Beans</a>.<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Modified k9's Dylan (our youngest member - currently at age 3years) loves spending time with his best buds Bella Vita, Johnny Royal & Brad Pit. Wherever Dylan is these pups are not far behind. Dylan helps us with the morning training exercises, feeding routine and also loves to be the first to give them their new toys or a special treat. Dylan learns through compassion every day and he is developing into one amazing little man. We are so proud of how involved he loves to be with the pups that come through our program and especially his own personal family dogs. </div>
<br />
Modified k9 is a Family fueled by compassion, raising the most awesome little guy god has given us. We are very blessed with what you see below and excited to see what the future hold with our little trainer in progress ;)<br />

Even on a <a href="http://www.hssv.org/docs/behavior/dog_tie_down.pdf" target="_blank">tie down </a>he is non stop playing or "trying" to get into trouble. . . but this lil stinker has gotten much better over the past few weeks and a lot of the thanks is to our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.130342433676989.15377.129811260396773&type=3" target="_blank">Bella Vita</a>. She has a way with the young ones. <br />
<br />
During their interaction we are close by to make sure all stay civil. Vita allows him to nibble but NO bite. When Johnny gets a little to rough she gently puts him in his place. Good thing for Johnny he can read Vita very well and picks up on just a look. After a few times of Vita letting Johnny know "enough play", he gave up and gave in to some cuddle time.<br />
<br />
Check out some pictures of her "getting Johnny to lay down".<br />

These past few days Johnny has been following Vita everywhere and he even started smiling that wonderful pit bull smile. Miss Bella Vita is dog selective so all the introductions that we do with her are done at "her pace", which is slow! Crate rotations, tie-downs, walks with much respectful space, lots of praise and of course treats for doing so well is the key to making this relationship as successful as it is.<br />
<br />
We will have many more pictures to share of these two love bulls, but for now have a look at some down time the other day. Johnny is almost fully healed from his neuter. When he is 100% we will be setting a play date for the pups to really take off and just be happy dogs. YAY FREEDOM!!<br />

She was all smiles, funny noises and making the cutest faces that will make you go "I LOVE THIS DOG!". Polly was overly excited to have the camera and the attention all on her. We loved the way she looked in these photos so much that we felt the need to share with you all and anyone wanting or needing a smile.<br />
<br />
Hopefully one of these pictures will reach out to that perfect person and make them give in to adding this ever so sweet girl to their family. Polly deserves nothing but the best and we know that all the waiting will be worth the while. So why we wait, we get the pleasure of this silly lady and all the smiles she brings to our life every day!! We hope you enjoy look at these photos as much as we did taking them.<br />

His wounds are healing at a steady pace. His healing process has been aided by good medication, lots of love and the laser procedures offered at<a href="http://local.yahoo.com/info-30993228-creekside-animal-hospital-tunkhannock" target="_blank"> Creekside Animal Hospital</a>. He has been meeting people left and right of all ages and loving every minute of it. Johnny even had the chance to be in the <a href="http://thetimes-tribune.com/news/thousands-line-streets-for-st-patrick-s-day-parade-1.1284000#axzz1oon2DzMa" target="_blank">Scranton St Patrick Day</a> parade this past Saturday. - We think he may have stolen the show a bit ;)<br />
<br />
Johnny was recently neutered on Monday and hasn't skipped a beat. When Derek brought him home after his appointment Johnny was overly excited and had more energy then when he left. All thanks to the great work and care of - again- Creekside & their awesome staff!!<br />
<br />
When Johnny started our program he was given time to just relax a bit but at the same time he was being rotated between the other dogs in the house. # 1 giving his wounds time to heal and then be neutered and #2 to give this boy some structure. His fist day on a tie down I came into the living room to find Johnny standing on our coffee table with all 4 paws. You may laugh and you probably would if you could of seen his expression but that is not acceptable behavior for any pup, no matter how cute they are.<br />
<br />
Over then next few weeks Johnny has been doing very well on his tie downs. The tie downs help him settle while in the house and he was able to take in all that was going on around him... including our crazy cat - Raisin Pheobe.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9373x_CdjvQ/T2IsW2gEEoI/AAAAAAAAArc/MutUWqV5-oQ/s1600/johnny+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9373x_CdjvQ/T2IsW2gEEoI/AAAAAAAAArc/MutUWqV5-oQ/s640/johnny+001.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Johnny is very curious of Miss Raisin but at the same time keeps his distance. Wouldn't you if you saw a creature like this. ;) While Johnny is on his tie downs he is also learning the "settle or wait" command. When he gets a little too rambunctious we tell him "no - settle". He will do as we ask but does bitch the entire way down. I mean, come on. . .settle is no fun compared to pouncing at a cat that moves in ways you can only imagine .</div><br />
On Johnny's tie downs he also gets to spend time with our 2.5 year old son Dylan. Dylan love to share his toys with the pups and his doing so helps the pups adjust to different noises and movement they may have not experienced in their past life.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ycng_4SO36U/T2IuJfFvU7I/AAAAAAAAArk/V-LobQCVNXo/s1600/johnny+019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ycng_4SO36U/T2IuJfFvU7I/AAAAAAAAArk/V-LobQCVNXo/s640/johnny+019.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Johnny's favorite part of his tie downs is seeing how close he can get to our other pups esp our Bella Vita. Vita is dog selective and she needs to be worked into another dog over time. She is not the type of girl that will be "friends" at 1st meet. So the crate rotations, walks together with no meeting/touching and tie downs for the new pups help Vita warm up at her own pace. Which in turn makes for best buds.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t1LDZSWXIrY/T2IvzII3JBI/AAAAAAAAAr0/S_ZIWSjlD1s/s1600/johnny+015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t1LDZSWXIrY/T2IvzII3JBI/AAAAAAAAAr0/S_ZIWSjlD1s/s640/johnny+015.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Keeping Johnny on a tie down while letting Vita have free roam allows her to get away from the dogs if they may be invading her space too much. <span style="font-size: x-small;"><b> </b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><b>Please note: even though Johnny is on a tie down, when we have another dog out as well we NEVER leave them unattended at any time together.</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div>Johnny seems to really like Bella Vita and we have a hunch she likes him as well, but is not letting us in on her secret yet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When Johnny is 100% healed from his neuter we will be setting up a special play date with him and a few of the pups. Keep checking back to see what else this boy has in store.</div><br />
It is just amazing isn't it. . .all that he has gone through with people & even other dogs, Johnny is STILL fun loving and friendly to all.<br />

He was pretty <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=346241375420426&set=a.346237678754129.86046.129811260396773&type=3&theater" target="_blank">banged up with multiple infected bite wounds</a> that cover a good amount of his body. As scene in his bio t<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">he word on the street is that Johnny was attacked by another breeder male over a female. </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 16px; text-align: left;">The worst part of this was that Johnny's</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 16px; text-align: left;"> "owner" instead of getting him medical treatment, he high tailed it out of town and abandoned Johnny in a house for an unknown period of time with out food or water. Left him with a mattress n a fish tank, what a great guy!!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">Thankfully, a very kind person got word of where Johnny was and got him out of the house and straight to the vet. - We are extremely thankful for this caring person! If it wasn't for them, Johnny would not be with us today.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">Since Johnny has been with us it as been nothing but love for this boy. A </span></span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=346374335407130&set=a.346237678754129.86046.129811260396773&type=3&theater" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 16px;" target="_blank">Bath,</a><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;"> good food, warm bed, </span></span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=346539092057321&set=a.346237678754129.86046.129811260396773&type=3&theater" style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 16px;" target="_blank">compresses for his legs,</a><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;"> and lots of attention from the mk9 crew. The only thing Mr J is not liking too much is his crate and being away from everyone. But we all know every pup that comes into the mk9 program needs structure and a </span></span><span style="line-height: 15px;">schedule</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">. So you can kick n scream all you want sweet Johnny, your cute face is not going to get you to do as you will around these parts of town.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">Johnny's little crate tantrums are decreasing as the hours go by. Which is excellent! We are taking notice to him </span></span><span style="line-height: 15px;">settling</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16px;"> in more and becoming curious of the other pups and the strange kitty that has been stalking him when he is not looking.<br />
<br />
We can not wait to see this little dude all healed from infection and start to come out if his shell. We have a very good feeling he will be stealing the hearts of many and loving every minute of it.</span></span></span><br />

The majority of the mk9 rescue dogs come from not the best of situations leaving these dogs without guidance, without socialization skills and without homes and families to make them feel safe. <a href="http://mk9rescuedog.blogspot.com/2012/02/josie.html" target="_blank">Josie</a> came to us not too long ago but in a short time she is taking steps to better days and it is all thanks to #1 her foster family for their patients, HARD work and drive to see her succeed.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
Here Josie is getting ready to meet her foster bother Toby for the fist time. They have been on a rotation and even though they are going on walks with one another they were never to meet until Josie had time to adjust to her surrounding. With pit bull dogs SLOW is the best way to introduce two new dogs. Esp if one has just come from a crappy situation. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FbKrmfrBHjo/T0OwqVUNz4I/AAAAAAAAAkc/L1rPQ44JBVg/s1600/a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="423" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FbKrmfrBHjo/T0OwqVUNz4I/AAAAAAAAAkc/L1rPQ44JBVg/s640/a.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>When we do introductions we do not allow the dogs to charge one another or go nose to nose. Nose to nose is an unnatural way for dogs to meet and could cause some problems if one is dog tolerant. So what we do is start walking with the 2 dogs. A handler for each pup and distance far enough that they can be close but not too close. Toby at first was a little stand offish but as we kept walking... and walking .. and walking you could see his body language start to change. He started accepting that Josie was near by.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9WtS5rB88-I/T0OwxlD-RbI/AAAAAAAAAkk/qjE8ddDVawk/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="373" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9WtS5rB88-I/T0OwxlD-RbI/AAAAAAAAAkk/qjE8ddDVawk/s640/a1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> After both dogs started to feel more relaxed around one another we moved them in close and started asking them to "Look" and "sit" - work for treats. They were also rewarded for allowing the other dog to be near. Keeping a dogs mind stimulated and focused on us at this time doesn't allow the dogs to "think" for them self and possibly get over worked and upset. It teaches them to focus on you and to let them know that you have the situation under control.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mnv813DC8A/T0OxxCsrvhI/AAAAAAAAAl0/zqfM5c3C0VI/s1600/a2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="423" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mnv813DC8A/T0OxxCsrvhI/AAAAAAAAAl0/zqfM5c3C0VI/s640/a2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> We worked the dogs by each other until we started seeing each dog come out of their shell in their own way. For Toby he started to give that pit bull smile and his body loosened up. For Josie she started feeling more confident to remove herself from our side and get closer to Toby and accept that he wanted to be friendly with her.<br />
<br />
One of the things Josie does not know is the "sit" command. Her foster parents are working on this with her every day. Some dogs take a bit longer depending on their confidence level. Mind you when Josie came into our program she was shut down and had no drive for food or toys. So helping her understand how to do a simple thing like sit on command was not as easy as you may think. Josie was even at a point to where she was afraid to go outside. We started putting the Thunder Shirt (as shown in the photos) on her before she left the house and so far it has been helping. She doesn't go crawling back to the house dragging her poor foster mom behind.<br />
<br />
We are actually using Toby to help Josie come out of her shell even more and to learn how to be a dog. We work Toby around Josie so she can watch him do his thing. Toby is a pro at sitting for treats and Josie is picking up. With a little guidance from us, praise and a reward Josie is learning to sit!! <br />
YAY JOSIE!!<br />

Now that Josie and Toby are feeling more comfortable with one another and everything to this point has been nothing but positive interactions we are stepping it up a bit an allowing them to play. We asked Josies foster dad to bring out a toy. . .<br />
<br />
Toby -<b> "<i>A ((TOY)) DID I HEAR YOU SAY????"</i></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SgPAKNUGiyk/T0OycM6YUHI/AAAAAAAAAmk/L8PI5UV_ybk/s1600/a9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="397" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SgPAKNUGiyk/T0OycM6YUHI/AAAAAAAAAmk/L8PI5UV_ybk/s640/a9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Bringing an object into the mix can be a tricky thing. You must know your dogs to attempt a toy play time. Tobys parents know their boy inside and out and Josie has shown no signs of "dog aggression" or dominance. So we had a feeling this would turn out to be a fun time for both and maybe even help Josie personality come out even more. If you are going to attempt this MAKE SURE you have someone with you that knows what their doing with an exercise like this and also the play MUST be observed at ALL TIMES! If the pups get a little two rammy then the play time needs a time out. You ALWAYS want to end a meet n greet on a positive level. There will always be more time for play so don't push your limits on a good thing.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Let the playing begin!!</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: large;"><br />

<br />
After the two relieved themselves we headed back into the house for some water and some down time.<br />
Josie does not like to be left alone so going her in her crate was an ordeal to say the least. After our training session, mind stimulation exercises and some physical play time Josie walked nicely into her crate and Toby made sure he stayed by his new friends side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lfqVqs1wi0o/T0Oxdz-QidI/AAAAAAAAAlc/tiRVEnfvM_A/s1600/a16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="423" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lfqVqs1wi0o/T0Oxdz-QidI/AAAAAAAAAlc/tiRVEnfvM_A/s640/a16.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Josie likes the idea of Toby being around and settled down quickly. It did help that we moved her to a slightly smaller crate then the one we had her in. The one she was in she would pull at the door, scratch at the floor and have a panic look about her. The smaller crate seemed to give her comfort and easy which is what we are looking for in helping this girl progress.<br />

Josie still has a long way to go before she is home ready. Her foster family is working on behavior training, basic obedience training and socialization every day. Slowly but surely Josie will adjust to every day life and she will find that it is ok to be alone because we will ALWAYS come back.Modified k9 Pit Bull Rescuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08215172542466940652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7813390273425689298.post-19471269565231218552012-02-19T07:41:00.000-08:002012-02-19T07:41:32.558-08:00JOSIE<span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 16px; text-align: left;">Update on our Newest Rescue Dog(Josie) will be posted in the next day or so.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 16px; text-align: left;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 16px; text-align: left;">Check back in to see how this extremely sweet girl has been doing since she has been with us for the past 2 weeks.</span><br />

Taking puppies away from their mother too soon not only causes the mother great grief but the puppies development and social skill will suffer and could cause behavior problems as they grow into adults.</span></span><br style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; line-height: normal;" /><br />

Alarm goes off for us around 5:30am every day (even on the weekends). We don't mind getting up at this time esp in the summer months because it is light out and letting the sun into our home gets everyone up and ready. During winter months we have to wake up the rescue dogs even after the alarm goes off.<br />
<br />
After we get ourselves squared away and the coffee is on we take all the dog out for a short morning walk for them to relieve themselves and back to the house we go. We start our routine with our longest resident which at this time is Joey. When Joey gets his breakfast we ask him to work for it with the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=246155875447670" target="_blank">nothing is free</a> (< click to see video) routine.<br />
<br />
After he finishes his breakfast we take him for a 30 - 45 minute hike around our local woods to get some extra morning energy out. The quiet one on one time allows him to focus on us while we work on some basic commands. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=275734782471086&set=a.177541812290384.42622.129811260396773&type=3&theater" target="_blank">(Look, sit, come</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=275734979137733&set=a.177541812290384.42622.129811260396773&type=3&theater" target="_blank">down</a> and "walk nice" or heal).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4m-IUAZjTS8/TzvQ9WtytZI/AAAAAAAAAfE/RjPeJfldFj0/s1600/Big+Joe+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4m-IUAZjTS8/TzvQ9WtytZI/AAAAAAAAAfE/RjPeJfldFj0/s640/Big+Joe+003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After our morning walk we head back to the truck, load up and set off for the downtown area towards several destinations to expose Joey to different people and sound situations (no other animals for our morning outings - that will be another time). We aim for busy places with people of all ages, places that are surrounded with cars and trucks coming and going and just about anything or any place we can expose Joey to that will be positive.</div><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ohXHx0BjzTc/TzvR8rQInjI/AAAAAAAAAfM/2JBcxxMPl9Q/s1600/joeys+outting+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ohXHx0BjzTc/TzvR8rQInjI/AAAAAAAAAfM/2JBcxxMPl9Q/s640/joeys+outting+006.jpg" width="423" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Where are we going today??</td></tr>
</tbody></table>The trick with all of these places is to make sure EVERY interaction is a positive one, so bring a pocket full of your pups favorite treats as a reward for staying calm and accepting people in a friendly manner. When you are out n about by this time you should know your dog, you should know what will set him or her off. Make sure you take in all of your surrounding so you can see things coming before your dog does.<br />
<br />
For example Joey gets upset over big rig trucks so we keep an extra eye out for them, when we see one coming we quickly get Joeys attention and start working him in the opposite direction. . .LOOK, sit, down, sit, walk nice...the trick it to keep him moving and focused on US until the truck passes. If we see him getting over stimulated because he hears or sees the truck we move faster and don't give him a chance to even think about the truck. In no time it's gone and he gets extra treats and love for dealing with it so well and staying focused "ON US".<br />
<br />
The best part of our outing and Joeys FAVORITE thing is when people "want" to meet him. He LOVES the attention and everyone he has met so far has been so wonderful with him, giving him a great experience which in turn sets him up for the next person he comes across.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o0vaFOMGfI4/TzvVmVGepdI/AAAAAAAAAfU/UfzPtr_KcAs/s1600/284839_231845946859970_129811260396773_738375_2811410_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="469" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o0vaFOMGfI4/TzvVmVGepdI/AAAAAAAAAfU/UfzPtr_KcAs/s640/284839_231845946859970_129811260396773_738375_2811410_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Joey meets the guys of AxelRad an awesome print shop in Kingston Pa</td></tr>
</tbody></table>The guys from <a href="http://www.axelradarmy.com/" target="_blank">AxelRad Screen Printing</a> allowed Joey to come into their shop, meet the crew and check out the machines that were making funny noises and sounds he has never herd before. We were not sure how he would handle the loud noises but Joey did very well. YAY JOEY!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nPoe31Nz5-4/TzvWrp0nuiI/AAAAAAAAAfc/xa0GeOqG01s/s1600/joeys+outting+005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nPoe31Nz5-4/TzvWrp0nuiI/AAAAAAAAAfc/xa0GeOqG01s/s640/joeys+outting+005.jpg" width="423" /></a></div><br />
Since Joey was staying nice calm so we left the shop on a good note and off to the next place. The next place is one of our favorites because the people are so awesome with our dogs. The place is <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/starbucks-wilkes-barre" target="_blank">Starbucks in Wilkes-Barre </a> where we held our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=152186594825906&set=a.129874350390464.15234.129811260396773&type=3&theater" target="_blank">Zombie PinUps and Pooches Event</a> and always load up on Vanilla Chai Latte with Soy milk. </div><div>Joey loves the ladies of Starbucks and took in all that was going on around him. The SB Wilkes-Barre location is extremely busy with all different kids of motor vehicles and people.. Some of the people walked by and just smiled, some walked by and stared and a few even stopped to say hi for a quick second before they went in for their coffee. Over all Joey had a great morning and all the experiences were POSITIVE so back to the mk9 home for some <a href="https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=250724634990794" target="_blank">Kong Wobbler Time ;)</a></div><div><br />
</div><div>Get those pups out n about and remember if your can not control your dog. . .control your atmosphere. <br />
Socialization is SO VERY IMPORTANT. If you ca not do this every day aim for every other day or even set aside one FULL day for nothing but socialization. Not only does it help your dog but it shows people that you are a responsible pit bull owner and your dog... which is a pit bull ... is AWESOME!!!! <br />
Happy socializing all!!</div><div>Much love all.<br />
<br />
PS:<br />
Fun tip. . dress your dogs up in cute or funny things some people that may not be sure about a pit bull will definitely pass a smile if they are wearing wings, flower lays or a funny hat. ;)<br />

Miss Polly seems to love EVERYONE she comes in contact with, yep. . . even Joey!! We actually think she will give him a run for his money when we do set up a play date for these two. But before then they will be getting use to one another through tie downs and "give me my space" walks. <br />
<br />
Polly has also befriended our Bella Vita. In their pictures they may seem like a match made in heaven but don't let the <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.286764268034804.75315.129811260396773&type=1" target="_blank">still frames</a> </b>fool you. Bella Vita is extremely dog selective to where she needs to be crate rotated for several weeks before ever meeting another dog and even then it is up in the air if she will accept them or not. <br />
<br />
Polly must have some magical touch... or pounce about her. Whatever it is she is an amazing little helper. She pulls a home together nicely with her "why can't we all be friends" attitude.<br />
<br />
Keep checking back for when Miss Polly Pocket & Joey get their play date!! ALL eyes will be on them ;)<br />

The hardest part is "the wait". Some of the rescue dogs that come through are scooped up as soon as they are labeled "adopt.a.bull" and some wait for as long as a year or so. We won't lie, when we have a pup that is waiting that long we do have some doubt if they will ever find their family, but we do have faith in things happening for a reason. These dogs may be here to teach us a little more of what we need to help the next or just to teach us a simple thing like patience. <br />
<br />
To these dogs there is no such thing as "time" they cherish every moment they get to spend with their people, ever extra treat you allow them to have or that they steel, every car ride and every walk in the park. To the rescue dogs that are "waiting" they are already home. They are with people that love them, care for them and help them progress with every day life.<br />
<br />
We all know that foster homes are temporary and to save another a forever home must be found for the rescue dogs waiting. We can only do so much, we open our homes, we socialize them, train them, get them medical, give them food, toys, unconditional love and net work our dogs but we can not do this alone. We need help getting these dogs noticed. This is a TEAM effort to save these dogs and to continue to save them. There is no reason why dogs like <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.129822710395628.15209.129811260396773&type=1" target="_blank">Macy</a> </span>and <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.221539881223910.61812.129811260396773&type=1" target="_blank">Lucy</a> </span>are waiting more then a year... no reason at all!!<br />
<br />
So please help us help these dogs in finding their families. The picture below of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.231831736861391.63733.129811260396773&type=1" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;">Polly</span></a> is not complete. Please share all of our rescue dogs info so we can complete another home.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Play! PLAY!Polly Pocket is a full of love and life kinda gal! She is ALWAYS happy and wanting attention. If it's not from us people, she'll get it from another critter in the house. Polly is lucky she is so darn cute ;)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ShdZZpSvd5s/TuKldxxEylI/AAAAAAAAAbk/J5kcJT2Nevw/s1600/stop+it+polly+008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="406" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ShdZZpSvd5s/TuKldxxEylI/AAAAAAAAAbk/J5kcJT2Nevw/s640/stop+it+polly+008.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Polly - "this is fine and dandy until I get that treat!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Moments like this on a rainy days when we can't get the pups out for a walk or run only last so long. Especially with a young girl like our Polly here. There is only so much peanut butter in a kong or treadmill you can offer a dog... just wanting to PLAY!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ecHH7pGogWA/TuKl-nJ88pI/AAAAAAAAAbs/laA9NyoxfGM/s1600/stop+it+polly+010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ecHH7pGogWA/TuKl-nJ88pI/AAAAAAAAAbs/laA9NyoxfGM/s640/stop+it+polly+010.jpg" width="426" /> </a></td><td style="text-align: center;"></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Now that's what I'm talking about! Much more fun!</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Polly is definitely the class clown of the mk9 home! She is always up to something that will put a smile on your face and make you say over and over - "your lucky your cute".<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Polly - "come out of the crate vita, come out come out come out!"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Now Miss Bella Vita is only this tolerant with the young pups ranging from 8weeks to 6 months. We are very surprised Vita is "being nice" to this one year old pushy tom boy. At times Vita does put Polly in her place, but it doesn't seem to last very long in Polly's world. There must be something really special about Polly and Vita is not letting on yet. . .<br />

She is learning how to have manners in the house and to be respectful of the other fur n "fur-less" kids that reside here. Polly is a fun loving needs to be in your face all the time kinda gal. Raisin on the other hand, not so much.<br />

So if you are a canine wanting to make friends with a feline, distance is key.<br />
Unless the feline decides other wise.<br />

He was actually waiting quite a bit for his family to find him. One of our favorite saying is "<i>it's worth the wait</i>" and that can not have any more truth to it in Little Louies case. He was adopted by the Gilligan family in March of this year and he couldn't of found a more loving and deserving family. <br />
<br />
As you will see Little Louie is one spoiled lil boy. His family goes above and beyond to make and keep him happy... which isn't a hard task may we add. A pat on the head, rub on the belly or a lacrosse ball does the trick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N8iG0Em-UxA/TtOnPXtiDsI/AAAAAAAAAZ8/YrEf6sXQL7Q/s1600/216947_1982234587788_1000892218_31763437_3861835_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N8iG0Em-UxA/TtOnPXtiDsI/AAAAAAAAAZ8/YrEf6sXQL7Q/s640/216947_1982234587788_1000892218_31763437_3861835_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Little Louie does in fact share his home with a feline friend. If you remember from Louies bio he does not do well with cats BUT in this case his family found a way to make it work. The cat stays at a distance and Louie could care less with all the pampering he has been getting.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qgq8Seg0IrI/TtOoBjzZn3I/AAAAAAAAAaE/jD6jcTFWOdQ/s1600/223010_1982234667790_1000892218_31763439_4600254_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qgq8Seg0IrI/TtOoBjzZn3I/AAAAAAAAAaE/jD6jcTFWOdQ/s640/223010_1982234667790_1000892218_31763439_4600254_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Little Louie is definitely King of his castle. </td></tr>
</tbody></table> When the modified k9 home gets a new foster, things are far from easy. It takes a lot of hard work, patience and know how to help these lost dogs find their way. The majority of the dogs that come through our program are like Louie. . .unloved, unwanted and have no clue about what being a "dog" is really like. Some of the dogs take a few months to come out of their shell, show their personality and open up to the kindness we show them. Little Louie went from a very distant pup to one that is overwhelmed with love and joy. Every day is a new exciting experience for him. All of his days are filled with positive encounters, clean water, warm beds, great food, lacrosse balls and the loving arms of the people that adore him.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uedu34NC_D8/TtOqSg-wcHI/AAAAAAAAAaM/32fXy4u5jvw/s1600/207936_163558323700702_100001396067354_372527_810333_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Uedu34NC_D8/TtOqSg-wcHI/AAAAAAAAAaM/32fXy4u5jvw/s640/207936_163558323700702_100001396067354_372527_810333_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Little Louie & his grandma. Miss O'</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>When you open your heart to fostering a dog in need your house takes a toll, your finances are drained, your patience are tested to their limits and your entire life is rearranged for one little being. <br />
<br />
Is it really worth it you may ask. <b><i> </i></b><br />
<b><i>ABSOLUTELY!</i> </b><br />
<br />
The reward of saving a life, making that life better and giving that life a second chance is worth every ounce of what we humans may endure during the foster rehabilitation period. Dogs like Louie here have a loved future and are part of a family, what could be a better out come for an underdog? When we see updated pictures from the rescue dogs families, our hearts just melt. We sit on the other side of the computer with a massive grin on our face and even though we may not let people see this side, our eyes are filled with tears that you just can't hold back. Tears of ultimate joy knowing one more life is safe and one more family is complete.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QhJ8P4-hh70/TtOuOO8gIsI/AAAAAAAAAaU/zF2Klffvaoc/s1600/223010_1982234547787_1000892218_31763436_7706212_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QhJ8P4-hh70/TtOuOO8gIsI/AAAAAAAAAaU/zF2Klffvaoc/s640/223010_1982234547787_1000892218_31763436_7706212_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Little Louis and his dad.</td></tr>
</tbody></table> So next time you see a rescue asking for foster homes to step out of their comfort zone and help one in need, we hope a lot of you will say <i>YES</i>!. We can not do this with out homes and with out people that want to make a difference. Action speaks louder. . .Foster a life in need today! You will be glad you did!<br />
<br />
Much love<br />

Polly, Joey, Macy and Lucy have been on their very very best behavior in hopes that Santa brings them their families.<br />
<br />
Polly Pocket is the newest addition to the mk9 program. She knows that the other pups have been waiting much longer to find their homes and she is making sure the house will be extra bright to get the big guys attention this year. Polly would like nothing more for the longest residence of the mk9 program to get their homes for the holiday. Macy, Joey & Lucy all have been waiting around a year or so, unfortunately with no interest.<br />
<br />
<br />
We are all hoping and praying things will change soon. <br />

Until that big day comes Santa needs some help making this years Christmas for the pups extra special. There will be a wish list event coming up December 17th at Valley Dog. Canine Santa Cause will be held from 1-7pm. <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oTAa6bJ0ARI/TsfZ7G8xvMI/AAAAAAAAAYc/2Pp6EWXry8c/s1600/treadmill+time+011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oTAa6bJ0ARI/TsfZ7G8xvMI/AAAAAAAAAYc/2Pp6EWXry8c/s640/treadmill+time+011.jpg" width="448" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Chelle & Miss Polly Pocket</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Treadmills are a great energy re-leasers! Not only will the treadmill kick some of the extra energy your dog may have but it is also a great mind stimulating exercise! When your dog is on the treadmill they have to think for themselves to stay in time with the treadmill as it moves. Treadmills come in extremely handy during the cold weather months or if you are a rescue/foster and have to rotate a few dogs to make sure they get the attention and exercise they need for the day.<br />
<br />
When you start your dog off on the treadmill you want him to get used to the surroundings and this new "thing" in your home. Let him/her walk on and off of it, let them sit on it and even ask them to lay down so they know there is nothing to fear. <i> </i><br />
<br />
<i>Guide them by it and reward them for accepting it.</i><br />
<br />
Some dogs take longer then other to get used to this machine, so when you aim to teach your dog to use the treadmill make sure you have about 2-3 hours set aside at first. No distraction in your home, and make sure your pup has done his or her business before you get started. You do not want to rush your dog, let him/her get comfortable at their own pace. In return your dog will accept this new training exercise and will look forward it.<br />
<br />
Below are two of the mk9 rescue dogs. <br />
Joey & Polly Pocket. Both dogs have taken to the treadmill in very different ways. <br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><b>Joey</b></span> was not to sure what this thing was.<br />
The sounds it makes when its on and the different texture of flooring<br />
.<br />
He would get on it when we asked but you could tell how uncomfortable he was, so we allowed him to get on and off at his own will. We sat on the treadmill and guided Joey over with treats. We praised him for walking up to it, stepping on it and then sitting on it. <br />
<br />
After about a 40 minutes we faced Joey in the right direction with Chelle standing over him making sure he wasn't going to jump off or get too overwhelmed when we started it up. Holding her hand at his side so he knew not to jump off, it reassured him everything will be ok and he is doing a GREAT job!!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Keep your hand on your dog if he is uncertian of the movement.<br />
This will guide him/her into place.</td></tr>
</tbody></table> We started him off at the lowest setting letting him get familiar with it moving on its own. At first he wanted no part, trying to lay down but Chelle stayed in place talking to him, telling him good boy and helping him with the aid of some of his favorite treats.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Treat your dog for doing a good job.<br />

</tbody></table> Joey is at a slow trot on a low setting and we will keep him at that pace for the next week until we start to see him relax when he is on the treadmill. After he is set we will move the speed and time up to give him a better work out.<br />
<br />

<b>Polly Pocket</b> picked up much faster then big Joe.<br />

<br />
Well, just what it says. "My pit bull is family", they are not just dogs but big parts of our lives. We take them places, involve them in every day activity and introduce them to the new exciting simple things life has to offer.<br />
<br />
Pit bull terriers thrive for the attention an affection of their owners. They WANT to be involved and they WANT to know all. They are not happy and they do not do well when left tied to a tree, dog house or left in a run. Not to mention the bad behaviors they tend to pick up being isolated and you are not helping your dog move forward. Pit bulls are extremely fast learners due to their drive to please their people. With a lot of positive socialization and exercise (for mind & body) your pit bull will be a well rounded, content family member.<br />
<br />
So next time you go to walk out your door for the day, let your best friend come with you. They will thank you for it at that time and later when their passed out on the bed from a fulfilled day. And who doesn't love a tired dog! <br />
<br />
Here are some pics of Polly Pockets day out. Dylan is turning into her best bud and we adore this little lady that is still waiting for her forever family.<br />

Made of <span class="commentBody" data-jsid="text">5ft-6ft PVC pipe, 13ft-15 ft rope (adjust as needed), & a toy which all comes to around $9.00-$12.00.</span><br />

<span class="commentBody" data-jsid="text">This is one of our favorite tools for tiring out our dogs. . . besides the treadmill and nose work. It is used for basic obedience training reinforcement, making the time with your dog fun, exciting and rewarding. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F6HmvhC4nHY/TsFg2TSj3rI/AAAAAAAAAWs/pI1hhhhfk3A/s1600/polly+n+cat+055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F6HmvhC4nHY/TsFg2TSj3rI/AAAAAAAAAWs/pI1hhhhfk3A/s640/polly+n+cat+055.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
We weren't really sure what to think when Raisin decided to come out from hiding to see what all the fuss was about. We all know when introducing our pit bulls to new things we should always try to keep the experience a positive one, but when it comes to terrier meets feline your guess is as good as ours on how it will go. Fortunately, this first time meet went very well. Polly was extremely curious and stayed very calm while Raisin made her way closer. We praised Polly for sitting nice and looking back to us for reassurance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OhjkEpCWBZs/TsFgquGM6LI/AAAAAAAAAWk/9mQ3bgtyX_U/s1600/polly+n+cat+058.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OhjkEpCWBZs/TsFgquGM6LI/AAAAAAAAAWk/9mQ3bgtyX_U/s640/polly+n+cat+058.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iPwj0RxtAsc/TsFhJNma3mI/AAAAAAAAAW0/ZOgz3TCql8E/s1600/polly+n+cat+057.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iPwj0RxtAsc/TsFhJNma3mI/AAAAAAAAAW0/ZOgz3TCql8E/s640/polly+n+cat+057.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
After a few minutes we brought Polly outside and ended the meet with Raisin on a good note. As of right now we are taking it slowly with Polly n "cats" to see if she can go into a new home that may have a feline family member. <br />

We are very impressed with this little lady that was minutes away from being euthanized. She has come along way with her training and we at mk9 know some day she will make an amazing addition to an expanding family. <br />
